Slovak churches
added to UNESCO Heritage list

Slovakia's heritage received a rare boost recently when eight rare wooden churches were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. The churches join six other Slovak sites already on the list The Slovak Spectator reported. The World Heritage Committee on July 7th added three Protestant churches, three Greek Catholic churches and two Roman Catholic churches built between the 16th and 18th centuries to their list. The Protestant churches are in Hronsek, Kežmarok and Leštiny. The Greek Catholic churches are in Ladomirová, Bodružal and Ruská Bystrá. The Roman Catholic churches are in Tvrdošin and Hervartov. According to UNESCO, "All present good examples of a rich local tradition of religious architecture, marked by the meeting of Latin and Byzantine cultures". Katarína Kosová, General Director of the Slovak's Monuments Board: "Inscribing the wooden churches onto the list acknowledges the exceptional value of the wooden sacred architecture located in Slovakia in this part of the Carpathian Mountain Area."

The move will put Slovakia on the cultural world map. The inclusion on the World Heritage List could increase tourism in this part of Slovakia as UNESCO sites are often the subject of attractive travel packages offered by both travel agencies and tourism boards. The locations of the churches, small towns and villages are often a long way from major tourist attractions so they might be able to benefit from the international attention. In Slovakia, wooden churches are mostly associated with Eastern Slovakia and the Greek Catholic Church. However, the country also has interesting wooden Protestant and Roman Catholic churches. Slovakia currently has six sites on the UNESCO list. Spiš Castle and its associated cultural monuments; the historic mining town of Banská Štiavnica and its surrounding monuments; the village of Vlkolínec; Bardejov's town centre; the primeval beech forests of the Carpathians (shared with Ukraine); and the Aggtelek and Slovak Karst caves (shared with Hungary).
