Marvellous Christmas bazaar is back

Tired of buying the same old Christmas presents for your friends and family? Then why not head down to this year’s 17th Christmas Bazaar. It will be held in the Old Market Hall in Bratislava on Sunday 18th November between 10.00 and 16.00. Organised by the International Women’s Club it promises to be one of the best places to buy something completely different for Christmas. Countries from all over the world will be represented including non EU countries like Serbia, America, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Korea, Japan and Brazil. EU countries include; Slovakia, Holland, Germany, France, Poland, the Czech Republic and the UK. All will be presenting Christmas delicacies and products typical of their country. There will be many interesting stalls around the whole area of the Old Market Hall and of course lots of curious people. Many of whom want to try and buy some of the numerous possible cuisines. Such delicacies will include cookies, sweets, wines, chocolates, mugs, aprons, calendars, Christmas cards and other such stuff. All goodies bought are supplied by natives from the countries they represent. All money raised will go to charity.

The First lady of Slovakia asked by journalists how she liked a previous bazaar said, “The atmosphere here is wonderful, drawing me even closer to Christmas. The idea of a charity bazaar of the international Women’s Club, establishing the tradition of charity bazaars, is marvellous. I really admire the women who can prepare such an amazing event.” She added, “Embassies present traditional products, Christmas delicacies and cakes of their own countries. On these counters you can see everything possible typical for particular countries. The fact that the proceeds will be used for charitable purposes is a beautiful idea, and I truly believe that events like this one will become more and more popular”.

START

1. BAZAAR’S: What do you know about bazaars? What exactly are they? Have you ever been to one? Have you ever been to an international Christmas bazaar? Go round the room swapping stories. Change partners often.

2. DICTATION: The teacher will read some of the article slowly and clearly. Students will write down what they hear. The teacher will repeat the passage slowly again. Self correct your work from page 2 - filling in spaces and correcting mistakes. Be honest with yourself on the number of errors. Advise the teacher of your total number of errors. Less than 5 is very good. 10 are acceptable. Any more is room for improvement! More than 20 - we need to do some work!

3. READING: Get students to read the passage aloud. Swap readers every paragraph.

4. VOCABULARY: Students look through the article. Underline/highlight any vocabulary you don’t know. Look in dictionaries. Discuss and help each other out. The teacher will go through and explain any words or phrases you are stuck with!

5. INTERNATIONAL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: With your partner think of 6 things you might buy at an international Christmas bazaar. Discuss.

1 4 2 5 3 6

6. STALL AT INTERNATIONAL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR: You and your partner are at an international Christmas bazaar. One of you is a stall holder at a stall that represents a country that is not your own. (You work at the Embassy of that country and are helping on a voluntary basis today.) The other is a buyer who wants to get some unusual Christmas presents and thinks the items on display on your stall might just be worth purchasing. The buyer needs to get 3 presents. Swap roles and change countries. Role play: 5 minutes.

7. CHRISTMAS BAZAARS: With your partner on the board write as many words to do with Christmas bazaars as you can. One-two minutes. Compare with other teams. Discuss together – linking your words.

8. CHRISTMAS KNICK-KNACKS: Think of 6 different Christmas knick-knacks you might get to decorate your home/apartment at Christmas. E.g. Christmas cards or something to decorate the tree with. What’s the most unusual item on your list? What’s the most expensive? What is the cheapest? Discuss and compare lists with your partner.

1                4
2                5
3                6

9. QUICK DISCUSSION: Student(s) A think international Christmas bazaars are fun and a great place to get Christmas presents. Student(s) B don’t rate them at all – preferring shopping parks.

10. TOMBOLA (RAFFLE): You are at the international Christmas bazaar. You see the international tombola stand. Think of 6 international gifts (donated by Embassies) that could be on it. (Imagine!) Which gifts would you like to win? Compare lists with your partner. Which is the best gift?

1 4 2 5 3 6

11. BAZAAR QUIZ: With your partner or in small groups: Student A 1) What day is the Christmas bazaar? 2) Name 4 non EU countries that will be taking part 3) Who was asked how she liked a previous bazaar? 4) Where does the money raised go to? 5) Who is organising the Christmas bazaar? 6) Where is the Christmas bazaar taking place? 7) How many Christmas bazaars have there been? 8) Who are curious? Student B 1) Name three things you can buy at the event 2) Name 4 EU countries that will be taking part 3) What time does the bazaar start? 4) What do Embassies present? 5) What is marvellous? 6) What do natives supply? 7) What is a beautiful idea? 8) Sum up the First ladies thoughts

12. SENTENCE STARTERS: With your partner(s), finish these sentence starters. Change partner(s) and talk about the sentences you made.

  1. The Christmas bazaar ____________________________________________

  2. The First lady ___________________________________________________

  3. The event _____________________________________________________
