Bringing
Korean cuisine to Europe Recently Slovakia has seen a surge in new Korean businesses
opening - like Kia, Samsung and LG. Last September another Korean
entrepreneur Yooni Suh landed in Bratislava BBC news recently reported. ÒI wanted to go
on a road trip and become an ambassador for Korean food.Ó He added, ÒFor me
itÕs just a new world of opportunity.Ó Ten months later heÕs set up a rival retailing
store against supermarket giants like Tesco and Carrefour. Suh continues,
ÒKoreans! Wherever they go in the world, theyÕve got to have Korean food.
What better place than SlovakiaÕs capital.Ó This has proved fruitful for the Korean
expat who has opened a Western styled supermarket in Bratislava selling south
East Asian food to expatÕs and locals alike. ÒItÕs about finding these
communities and supplying them with food that they were never able to buy at
reasonable prices.Ó Since leaving London, where his family has been running
a very profitable Korean food business for years, Suh is now distributing all
things Korean around the region. These include mackerel, prawns and red
pepper paste. He is preparing to open a restaurant in the city centre and a
string of sushi-style oriental fast-food outlets in shopping centres. He is
presently negotiating a Korean food supply deal with the Co-op, which has
shops in every village. Suh discovered there is more to this than just the
Korean expat community. ÒSince arriving here, IÕve realised Korean food can
have a much wider audience. This is not just an oriental thing, itÕs a health
thing.Ó He adds, ÒItÕs about providing choice. If you donÕt have a choice you
donÕt have the freedom to eat what you want.Ó SuhÕs business plan is to Òtake
a street market and repackage it for Westerners.Ó This has involved cookery
demonstrations and product labels translated into Slovak. He has already
appointed agents in Prague, Budapest and Italy. He plans to conquer Europe
with his Korean Food shops. |
1. KOREAN FOOD: What do you know about Korean food? Have you ever been to
a Korean supermarket? Have you eaten at a Korean restaurant? Go round the room
swapping stories. Change partners often.
2. DICTATION: The teacher will read some of the
article slowly and clearly. Students will write down what they hear. The
teacher will repeat the passage slowly again. Self correct your work. Compare
your work with your partner(s) and try to recreate the full text. Listen again
to check, fill in spaces or correct mistakes. Be honest with yourself on the
number of errors. Advise the teacher of your total no of errors. Less than 5 is
