Holiday preferences - Slovak style

With the summer holiday season approaching now is the time to consider where you might like to go on holiday. While some people may already have booked up this year's vacation others will leave it till the last minute before deciding. Half the fun is choosing where you want to go and once you have done that you then have to decide the type of accommodation you want to stay in. Everyone has their own idea of what type of holiday they want. Things to consider when booking include location, your budget and availability. Here in Slovakia a recent survey showed that Slovaks going on holiday most often look for private accommodation or a mid-category hotel. In fact some 38% of Slovaks plan to spend their summer holidays away from home this year, with most preferring a holiday abroad. Favourite foreign destinations include Croatia, Egypt, Tunisia and the UK.

The most important criterion for Slovaks when choosing a holiday abroad is price, followed by the suitability and quality of accommodation. This is according to a survey of 1,000 respondents undertaken in March this year that was carried out by the GfK Slovakia agency - according to TASR-SLOVAKIA. Holiday-makers who have decided on a foreign country most often look for private accommodation. This is preferred by 26% of tourists, and especially by men. Women favour middle-category (three-star) hotels followed by higher-category (four-star) hotels and guest houses. The least popular options are camping and very basic accommodation. Many older Slovaks still take their own food abroad with them - a throwback to when holidays were expensive due to the then high exchange rate. Slovak holiday-makers planning to spend their holiday in Slovakia most often look for accommodation in a rented cottage (28%). Staying with friends and relatives is also popular, especially for women. Men tend to look for private accommodation. Around one-tenth of holiday-makers look for guest houses or a middle-category hotel.

START

1. HOLIDAY PREFERENCES: What are your holiday preferences for this year? Why these? Go round the room swapping stories. Change partners often.

2.DICTATION: The teacher will read some of the article slowly and clearly. Students will write down what they hear. The teacher will repeat the passage slowly again. Self correct your work from page 2 - filling in spaces and correcting mistakes. Be honest with yourself on the number of errors. Advise the teacher of your total number of errors. Less than 5 is very good. 10 are acceptable. Any more is room for improvement! More than 20 - we need to do some work!

3. READING: Get students to read the passage aloud. Swap readers every paragraph.

4. VOCABULARY: Students look through the article. Underline/highlight any vocabulary you do not know. Look in dictionaries. Discuss and help each other out. The teacher will go through & explain any words or phrases you do not understand.
